I browse around the used bookstores online from time to time, and this is one of the better ones I have. I would like to have a deer book like this. I found this at Abe Books. Boze has a newer book titled, “No Bait, Just Bears”, but none on the used market, although written around the same time…that was like $40, and that would buy a box of bullets! I have my priorities…LOL
What I like about this book is that is has quite a bit of strategy on hunting black bear specific, and that’s what I have in my area of Northern California. Our black bear are not too big out west, boars are about 200 lb. average. We can only hunt bear during deer season in any given zone, and each zone lasts about 6-8 weeks. A bear tag is valid all year, so you need to move around the zones to time it right, and all rifle hunting in California is between July 1st - December 31st. Boze is kind of famous for calling in bears, something I would like to learn. This year will be my first bear hunt. This will keep me off the computer for a while…;)

I had a chance to read a few chapters in this book, and I must say, Douglas Boze must be my long lost twin, from a different mother. He shoots a 300 WSM to hunt bear, Carries a 45 side arm for protection, has a 30-30, but would like to buy a 45-70 as the bear brush gun, and loves lever actions. All of my vintage machines are analog, although I program Embedded Linux. Even Boze admits that a 300 WSM can be a bit much on a black bear, unless you can find a 350-500 lber, fairly rare in the lower 48.
Nice to see vitals, shot placement, and especially in comparison to a deer, as I am familiar with that. All in all, this is a great book, I wish I had something like this for blacktail. This is the best black bear book I have.
